So I want some help gathering ideas for the Sock Club so I’m hosting a little contest. Here’s the details:

You comment here on the blog with an idea for a Rock Your Socks Off colorway. This should consist of the following:

    • a band, artist, group or sub genre of rock that is worthy of representation in wool
    • a description of this band/artist etc. and why they are awesome and why they rock your socks off
    • a description of a colorway that could be used to portray the band/artist/what-have-you. (Like ‘Santogold makes me think of rich reds, golds and deep browns, blah blah blah.’)
    • At least three songs that correspond with this band/artist that you would suggest as recommended listening to go with the yarn.

You can enter as many times as you like, but each entry must be different. This contest will run for the next two weeks and I will announce the winner on Monday January 26th. If you post about this contest on your blog and link to the Rock Your Socks Off information page in your post you will get an extra entry. To get that extra entry email me (daniella@danido.com) with the URL for your blog entry.

There will be two winners!

For the Best Pitch (for the colorway description) here is what you will win:

1 hank of my hand dyed yarn. You can either pick an existing colorway from those listed in my Etsy shop or you can choose to have your winning entry description dyed by me just for you (and maybe for the upcoming sock club members!), if I use your description in the sock club you will be credited with coming up with the description and I will gladly link your blog, shop or website if you’d like on the yarn label. If you choose the latter you can either have a fingering weight or bulky weight (because that’s what I currently have on hand) base.

This winner will be chosen by myself and a small committee of other music nerds (um, the other gals at Loud and Mouthy obviously.) on the 26th, the winner will be notified by email (so be sure you leave me an email address when you comment!)

Then there will be a 2nd winner drawn at random (so all those who comment get 1 entry, plus extras for posting about the sock club on their blogs) and this winner will get a set of stitch markers and a coupon for 20% off any regular priced item (so no sale items) listed in my shop.

If you don’t know what the sock club is all about visit the information page for details on the club.

Also: there are still several spots available at the discounted price (see this post for details). Keep in mind buying the 20 cent listing simply holds your spot on the waiting list, the full amount for the club is not due until February! I will send out the invoices the first week of February and you will have a week or so to pay them, so really we could squeak by to mid February before full payment is due. I’m just trying to get an idea of who all is going to be involved so I can have a ballpark of when I need to start dying, packing, shipping, etc. Currently we have 5 people that are participating for sure so the club is definitely a go!

мебелиOkay! On your mark, get ready, set, ROCK MY SOCKS OFF!

rocksocks 140x200ravad

fine print: As per usual for my contests if you are a member of Sin City Knits, work at or with Knit Las Vegas or have been to my house for any social occasion sadly you are not eligible to win. But the good news is you’re probably my friend which means you have probably been the lucky recipient of my yarn, knitwear, patterns or baked goods in the past and will again in the future. So fret not dear friend, you have won in life which is way better than this contest. But um, while I have your attention if you wouldn’t mind pimping the sock club to other people I may not know that would be awesome. Brownies for everyone! <3

  1. a band that is worthy of representation is Paramour because hayley wiliams has an awesome voice and shes got spunk and she also plays the accordion
i guess they could be considered alternative.they are awesome because they are a good mix of pop and punk but aren’t whiny like some other female singers can be in the same genre
    they rock my socks off
description of a colorway purplemore its definately purple i think
    three songs decode,misery business, crushcrushcrush

  2. Laura! says:

So my blog automatically commented. Wierd. But I pimped! Yay!

I am also here to suggest a colorway.

Artist: Backstreet Boys. (HEAR ME OUT!)
Why?: Do I really need to explain? You know how much I love them. I feel that they are completely underrated among the general public, because of the boy band stereotype. But they can harmonize like nobody’s business, and they can dance circles around anyone and everyone. Yeah, they may not play instruments all the time (but they all play guitar!) but that doesn’t make them less of a legitimate “band,” I think.
Colorway: Sky blue, white, and silver. Their album, Millenium (arguably their best), had this color scheme, and I will always associate it with my Boys.
Songs: I Want It That Way, Larger Than Life, Just Want You To Know, More Than That, Siberia.

  3. Purlescence says:

I would love to see a yarn that captures the music of Rusted Root. It would have to be a yarn with deep seductive colors and a sense of mystery — cool dark chocolate, art deco teal, warm plum, and deep muted gold.

  4. Purlescence says:

My second choice for yarn inspiration would be another one of my favorite bands — the Black Eyed Peas.

I think this yarn would have to a mixture of burnt orange, smokey violet, dark crimson, and black.

    I want this yarn! :)

  5. Irma says:

I have so many choices going on in my head at the moment… but the one that sticks out would be something for the group No doubt.

Normally their covers are quite bright and highly colored, but when I hear them, I see smokey gray, charcoal, dark blue and a splash of bright cherry red (lipstick red).

  6. Chrissy says:

I recommend Kiss. Kiss is a classic American rock and roll band which began in the early 1970’s and was known for its trademark black and white make-up and live performance pyrotechnics. The longevity of the artists and their classic rock and roll music makes them worthy of being represented in wool. The colors would be black and white with a touch of red for the tongue-wagging Gene Simmons. The 3 songs I recommend are Rock And Roll All Nite, I Was Made For Lovin’ You, and Detroit Rock City.

  7. admin says:

Excellent submission! And totally worthy of representation in wool! Thanks!

  8. Chia says:

Holy bejesus…you just opened Pandora’s box for me. This is the type of contest I can never, ever not participate in. Prepare for many entries:

#1 – Goldfrapp – How could you not? Her voice is like liquid gold and super sexy. Colourway…some kind of mix of golds (but not marigoldly, something bright)with shocks of other colours, like red or lime green, maybe even some sparkly wool yarn as a base.

  9. Chia says:

#2 Depeche Mode – It’s total 80’s/Goth/New Wave genius. They will be on tour again too! Something stormy…greys/blues.

Oh yeah…for Goldfrapp, if it gets picked, maybe you could call the colourway “Ooh la la la” or “Black Cherry” (for a Black Cherry colourway duh).

  10. Chia says:

Ok, I screwed up. I got so excited I didn’t read the rules all the way.

For Goldfrapp – Ooh la la la; Number One; Black Cherry and Yes Sir I Can Boogie

For Depeche Mode – Precious, Behind the Wheel, Enjoy the Silence

  11. Kristen says:

I’d like to suggest Will Hoge. His music just makes me want to dance and sing along. The songs to experience would include: Not That Cool, Be The One, and Secondhand Heart. I think you could do a great red/burgundy/pink combo called Secondhand Heart.

  12. Christina says:

I second goldfrapp and each of those songs are faves and it woud be awesome to have a felt mountain yarn

  13. Kristen says:

My next suggestion is Jason Mraz. Songs to listen to: You and I Both, Geek in the Pink, and Curbside Prophet. Aside from the obvious Geek in the Pink colorway, I think you could do something in gray, blue, green and white that would be great!

  14. JuliaA says:

    REM:

    just a touch–very pale color

    murmur–grays/neutrals

sweetness follows–rich pinks and red shades

nightswimming–dark rich blues mixed with some aqua

    orange crush–vivid kettle-dyed oranges

  15. admin says:

OMG ORANGE CRUSH. Love it. Good ideas. Thank you!

  16. JuliaA says:

i love prince. catchy, sexy, fun.

    raspberry beret

    little red corvette

    purple rain

    pink cashmere

    kiss

    play in the sunshine

    starfish and coffee

delirious and let’s go crazy–bright bright color mixes

  17. Christina says:

Yes on the rem. Electrolite yarn. Omg. I have no idea what colors it would be but it’s one if my favorite songs of all time.

  18. Nadine B says:

Norah Jones. She has such a great voice and the same songs have a different feel depending on my mood. (She is also the singer for the Peter Malick Group)

The yarn should be mostly in the grey to black range, representing the dark streets of New York and the smokey jazz clubs. But it will have spots and splashes of neon lights, teal, purple, green, yellow, red that represent the signs for the clubs and the lights of New York City

    Songs:
New York City (Peter Malick Group, New York City album)
Turn Me On (Norah Jones, Come Away With Me album)
Don’t Miss You At All (Norah Jones, Feels Like Home album)

  19. Bliss says:

What fun! I am going to advocate for Duran Duran (what can I say, I was a teen in the 80’s.) They were creative, original and unapologetic in their quasi-androgeny. I think this could be an opportunity for some cool male-friendly (but not boring) colorways. I’m a woman, but have lots of men in my life (I have four sons) and I often struggle to find cool sock yarn for them. But plenty of room for girly stuff here too (they did wear lots of eye makeup).

    Ideas:

Union of the Snake – a snakey colorway, greens and browns or something

Rio – think sea and sand – blues, aquas, tans

New Moon on Monday – I picture something dark, perhaps with white or cream for the moon?

Girls on Film – ooo, something sexy, with red, black and white comes to my mind.

I Take the Dice – this would be a great black and white, maybe with a pop of some other color?

Wild Boys – I’m picturing like burgundy, black, plum, dark green, something manly but fun

Secret Oktober – an autumn colorway

I could go on and on….

  20. melanie says:

I nominate Donovan. Not only did he embody the gentle and mystical sixties, but he has remained a wonderful solo performer, bardic, almost, in the way he interweaves his songs with the story of his life. The colours could be a tie-died swirl, but muted as befits a gentle troubador, not garish.

  21. melanie says:

I also nominate Patti Smith, the original punk-rocker whose first popular songs – “Horses” and “Because the Night” – introduced us to an androgynous poet whose work continues to be influenced by Blake, Rimbaud, and Allen Ginsberg.

The colourway would start with black and white, but should incorporate some purples for Rimbaud, and greys for her hair.

  22. Turtle says:

One band would be The Dresden Dolls. Fabulous dark rocking chick who plays fab piano and a dude on the drums…that’s pretty much the band. But they are wonderful…girl power is what you feel listening to it and not in a “i’m 12″ type of girl power way. I think of black, silvery grays smokey grays, hot pinks and baby pinks. (actually the black, silvery gray, smokey gray would go well with almost any other bright and soft color combo with this band)
    a few songs:
Karma Police , Colorblind , Imagine, The Sheep Song, Blueprint, Backstabber, Girl Anachronism, The Jeep Song, Coin Operated Boy

    A great band!

  23. Turtle says:

they define themselves as “Punk Cabaret” a good color line maybe!

  24. Chia says:

Hmm…I am so hooked after playing Maps on Rock Band lol!
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs –
Maps – Subtle flowing colours, like pale steel pinks into pale steel blues into pale steel greens…because oh sock yarn, they don’t love you like I love you
Date With the Night – Shades of purple with jags of different shades of reds
Honeybear – Warm honey yellow transitioning into melon shades

  25. admin says:

You know I have already done “Date with the Night”, “Modern Romance”, “The Sweets”, and “Cheated Hearts” as sock yarns before. :) And the Date with the Night was almost what you described. Great minds think alike!

  26. Meredith M. says:

I nominate the group Stars under the label “Arts & Crafts.” Their songs are instrumental and very emotionally charged yet sweet and melodic enough to rock you to sleep…. which is how I describe yarn. sweet clouds of puff to help rest your mind after a long hard day. I imagine a mix of blues, deep purples and silvery grey.

    Songs:
    Calendar girl
    The Big Fight
    Your Ex-Lover is Dead

  27. Jackie says:

    What a fun idea!

My #1 ROCK band pick – Aerosmith.

    Why?

They’re icons in the rock world. Not a flash in the pan. Their 30 year career. Their songs and music have stood the test of time.

Their songs I would listen to while creating? Dream On, Sweet Emotion, and Walk this Way.

    Colorways:
They’re a rock band. Black should accent the colorway. Blacks and pinks would be great….would go with their song “Pink” or “Love in an Elevator”. I think black with a couple of shades of pink and/or grey would be fantastic.

  28. Heather (Muppetfeet on Ravelry) says:

    Suggestion #1:
    Joni Mitchell

Why: Do I really need a reason? She’s a rocking lady, an amazingly talented and inspirational musician, and a true artist. Plus she’s an icon of one of Rock and Roll’s most defining periods.

Colors: If you can find a base with some firestar in it, that would be awesome, because I always think that Joni’s voice is “sparkly” for lack of a better word. For colors, I’d do a rainbow, because she encompasses many genres and moods, but not a traditional bright rainbow, a rainbow made up of deep dark colors. For example, crimson, gold, forest green, ocean blue, and royal purple. Or colors taken from her paintings, which also incorporate a lot of deep, rich colors.

Songs: Magdalene Laundries, Blue, Woodstock, River

  29. Heather (Muppetfeet on Ravelry) says:

    Suggestion #2:
    Counting Crows

Why: The lead singer is cute…

But seriously because I love them as musicians. They also encourage recording at their concerts, and are advocates for music sharing. Belief in the freedom of music resonates strongly with me.

Colors: Blue, bright green, golden yellow, brown

Songs: Perfect Blue Buildings, Omaha, Raining in Baltimore, Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby

  30. Sharon Rose says:

    1) Johnny Cash! The Man in Black – you could do a series with black and another color. One with streaks of pink for June Carter’s lipstick, for example, and orange / yellow for Ring of Fire. With grey for Folsom Prison! With faded denim for his blue-collar fanbase! Flesh and Blood suggests red. :) Walk the Line would have gold, for a wedding band. A Boy Named Sue might call for black and blue…

    2) On a more upbeat note, ABBA! This would have to be a series with lots of bright gold and silver – maybe even metallic accents! Money, Money, Money would have green. :) Other essential listening: Fernando (red), Mamma Mia (pink), Chiquita (yellow).

  31. Sharon Rose says:

Oh darn – forgot to tell you why they deserve homage – but does it really need to be said? They are legends! Essential listening for all humans! :)

  32. Lexi says:

    Who better than The Who?

The Who is classic, iconic, revolutionary, and yet still relevant. And, even at 64, Roger Daltrey still has the most incredible set of pipes- with which he can still reach every corner of a stadium. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame the first year they were eligible and are one of the most influential groups of all time. Their concert in the fall was one of the most intense experiences I have ever had and just made me glad to be alive- they really do rock my socks.

    Recommended listening would be:
    Baba O’Riley
    Behind Blue Eyes
    La-La-La-Lies

I think that Baba O’Riley lends itself to acid green, electric blue, bright red, and bright purple, more spotted than long strips of color. It’s the notes at the beginning of the song that just feel like spots of paint being thrown at a canvas or an LSD trip. Behind blue eyes would be a beautiful mix of dark and pale blue with black or maybe some blood red thrown in.

  33. Lexi says:

I’d also have to nominate Jack White. Every since I heard his heartbreaking rendition of Jolene, I was sold.

Besides just rocking, how could you not love a rocker who almost went into the seminary? And he is wonderfully eccentric- being obsessed with the number 3, playing a 1-note concert, but still managed to give his kids reasonable names. And finally, how many others could boast that their ex-wife was their maid of honor at their second wedding? Rock is all about being just that much off.

I think it’s pretty self-evident that the colorway would have to be red, white, and black.
    Good Listening:
    Jolene (the acoustic version)
    Another Way to Die
    Blue Orchid

  34. i have to nominate tool

    best songs

    aenima
    stinkfist
schism sre three songs i love that aenima pays tribute to bill hicks.

tool rocks there hard core love em got to meet maynard he walked off stage after singing aenima (he was in his underwear) and was like hey whats up and i was like not much how yah doing

for their colorway i envision black with a midnight blue and some gold thrown in the mix i would call he colorway eccentric darkness

  35. Katelyn says:

BarlowGirl! I love BarlowGirl because they are a tell it like it is kind of band and because you can REALLY sing along with band.

Grey; I see greys and oranges

AverageGirl; I see pure white and purples and pinks

She Walked Away; I see black regrets in the beginning which turns to a beautiful silver, like every cloud has a sliver lining.

    PunkBunny on Ravelry!

  36. Lynlee says:

Ben Folds – because he is creative, straight-talking, and hilarious while also being completely insightful.

Colors: Black, white, bright blue and bright green. Maybe with just a small splash of fuchsia. Black and white for his piano (and his black, horn-rimmed glasses). The blue and green in bright shades because, while being somewhat melancholy colors, they’ve also got quite the zing – just like Ben. And the (possible) bit of fuchsia because it just suits him.

    Songs:

    Still.
There’s Always Someone Cooler than You.
Kate. (Technically, this is Ben Folds Five, not just Ben Folds, but I don’t think he’d mind.)

  37. Lynlee says:

Tori Amos – because nobody quite understands her, but you can’t help but love her and you constantly learn new things about yourself and the world by listening to her music.

Colors: Black, White, Purple (maybe more of a raspberry/pinkish-purple), and Orange. (black for her darker side, white for her lighter side – and both for her piano, purple because it’s a color that holds a bit of mystery, and the orange for Tori’s hair)

    Songs:

So many… It is hard to pick just 3, so I’ll try to span her career.

    Crucify
    Raspberry Swirl
    Sweet the Sting

  38. admin says:

Oh Tori Amos is a given. :) I could do months devoted to her. I have a great idea for a Little Earthquakes (the entire album, not just the song.) colorway. Great suggestion though!

  39. Kate says:

Pink Martini. You can hear bits of their music at pinkmartini.com I find it hard to define the type of music…it is retro, salsa, both silly and intelligent.

Hey, Eugene — a well known song of theirs that they did on Letterman. References to NYC and salsa club. This should be an edgy, sassy sock with a NYC vibe. MMmm…black with some sizzle maybe.

Una Notte de Napoli — Italian, sexy, seductive. These socks must be socks that knock your socks off.

Sympathique — French with a retro feel like an old French movie with a lot of new sass. These are French socks…sophisticated, very droll, understated sexy. Watch the video of this on youtube–very much fun.

  40. Jenny says:

    Indigo Girls!

The Indigo Girls are a great, female folk duo. Their music is often inspiring, sometimes romantic, and always fun to listen to while knitting. Plus, some of their music is independently produced!

Their name is “Indigo Girls” so the name lends itself to a colorway of shades of purples and blues. I would see it as softer shades because their folk style lends itself to a softly changing colorway instead of brilliant sapphire shades.

Songs to listen to while knitting:

    - “Get Out the Map” shows such movement!
    - “Power of Two” is a romantic song with a beat that I enjoy knitting to (plus I was proposed to with that song playing)
    - “Closer to Fine” is a song that has a sweet, lyrical sound that won’t interfere if you need to concentrate or that can be listened to more closely if you’re on a long stretch of stockinette

  41. Jessica says:

    I nominate Smashing Pumpkins

I wouldnt know how to begin to describe Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan has one of those voices that soothes me.

A good colorway for them would be cool colors. Blues, Gray, Black and White.

    Recommended Songs: Thirty-Three, TonightTonight, 1979

  42. Lynlee says:

    Yay for Tori Amos yarn!!!

    She’s my favorite ever.

What about Poe? Poe needs yarn, too. She’s terrbily awesome and so very under-rated.

Poe is super-dark purple and green and blue (jewel tones) because she’s fancy like that.

Songs I recommend: Angry Johnny. Hey, Pretty (make sure you listen to the spoken-word re-mix as well!). A Rose is a Rose.

  43. Suzanne says:

I like Jamie Johnson’s (country)song see it in color, Its a moving song that tells a grandfathers life story in black and white pictures and how it was to see it in color(real life)to a grandchild, the color way for the yarn should be grey and white with some red and blue as they were the only colors named in the song

  44. Angela says:

My suggestion is Prince. Prince songs, whether you admit to yourself and everyone else that you love them or not, are those kind of songs that you just can’t help moving to and singing along to! He makes me think of rich jewel tones with his colorful personality and music. Three songs to go with it could be names of colorways! Rasberry beret, little red corvet, and purple rain :)

  45. Dove says:

I totally think Dar Williams deserves to have a colorway named after her. She’s not quite a rocker — she’s a folk singer, really, but guess where rock got its roots? Her lyrics and music are fantastic, and she’s got songs to make you laugh, cry, and think. I’d associate her with kind of calm green tones, but with an occasional splash of bright and unexpected color thrown right in!

Recommended songs: “Blessings,” “Arrival,” and, because everyone loves to sing along, “the Christians and the Pagans.”

  46. Estherq says:

Oh dear this contest made me go a little crazy!

    #4 Bee Gees
-Nostalgia enjoyed by all the family. The dancing, the music, those high pitched voices!
-grass green, bright yellow, black, white/cream, orange, bubble gum pink (All those psycho 70’s colours with the addition of Travolta’s dancing suit!)
-Jive Talking, Tragedy, Night Fever, Staying Alive

    #3 Metallica
    - this music calms me down when I’m really annoyed. Appeals to the biker chick in me.
    - shades through grey to black with the occasionally dash of blood red
    - All of the Metallica album.

    #2 Evenescence
    - This music plays to the tragic misunderstood teenager in me who has never quite grown up.
    - Dark Purple, Grey Black, Burgundy – (Gothish)
    - Bring me to Life, My Immortal,
Broken (Seether + Amy), Heart-Shaped Box,

At last but defnately not least I second Abba with a different colourway

#1 Abba – the Spandex Years
-sky blue, darker but not dark blue, white/cream, silvery blue because colours remind of those skin-tight spandex suits they were so fond of.
    - Nostalgia, Abba are a family favourite. They always makes me want to sing & dance or at the very least move those needles!
-Waterloo, I do, I do, I do, Mamma Mia, Super Trooper……
(to be honest once Abba’s in the CD player I’m not taking it out)

    Esther

  47. Lynlee says:

I love Dar, too! I’d recommend listening to Beautiful Enemy, I Saw a Bird, and Closer to Me. And if you have time, just the whole The Beauty of the Rain album.

  48. K says:

    OOOOooohh, I love this contest!

I would really love to see some Cubano music represented (or even just Latin music in general). Maybe the Buena Vista Social Club, since they’re fairly well-known and because Ibrahim Ferrer was an *amazing* musician.

Why? Because those socks would be HOT!!! Socks to go dancing in for sure! The music is lively and creative, and just so sexy.

For colors, red is definitely an obvious choice. I’m thinking really saturated warm colors. Buena Vista Social Club also sometimes used a green and yellow theme on posters, but when I listen to the CD I think of really warm reds ranging from a brilliant orangy-red to a dark, rich brick red, and highlights of gold and lemon yellow. (Which is funny, because I don’t usually wear those colors, but I would for these socks.) Alternatively, I can see the darker reds with a really dark, deep blue, like you were out dancing past midnight.

    For songs:
    * “Chan Chan” is probably the most famous Buena Vista Social Club song, sort of their calling card.
    * “Candela”
    * “El cuarto de Tula”
All of these are from an album that’s just called “Buena Vista Social Club.”

From the album Buena Vista Social Club presents: Ibrahim Ferrer
    * “Marieta”
    * “Qué Bueno Baila Usted”

  49. Erin says:

Queen- awesome songs, rocking guitars, plus Freddie Mercury is a god. RIP Freddy. Lots of bright reds and oranges and golds mixed with white, for Freddie’s jumpsuit. Songs to use would depend on what you’re knitting: for example, if you’re turning a particularly difficult heel that just won’t come out right, try “Save Me,” “Under Pressure,” “The Show Must Go On,” and “I’m Going Slightly Mad.” If you’re knitting so fast your needles are smoking and churning out cables that would make a knitting guru green with envy, try “We Are the Champions,” “In the Lap of the Gods,” or “The Miracle.”

Or else you could go for the Beatles: make it in reds, blues, yellows and greens to mimic the Andy Warhol painting of them…
