Piccola Bellezza Sox (Small Beauty Sox)

This pattern is for itty bitty baby socks. They are worked with short row heels and toe and use barely any yarn at all. If you would like to knit this pattern but don’t have a baby to give them too, I am knitting these to give to a local organization that helps babies born premature with health problems and/or addicted to drugs. If you would like to find out more about donating socks to this organization you can email me at daniella@danido.com.

If not and you just want to knit them for yourself please do so and enjoy! Please do not sell or reproduce this pattern without giving credit to Daniella Cortez and/or DaniDo Crafty. If you find an error in the pattern please email me at daniella@danido.com.

Piccola Bellezza Sox

Small gauge crochet hook for crochet cast on
US 1 double pointed needles (set of 5)
Lornas Laces Shepard Sock (or any sock weight yarn, gauge may vary.)
Darning needle
1 stitch marker
Scrap yarn for crochet cast on (I recommend a smooth cotton yarn)

Directions:

Toe is knit flat back and forth, when toe is complete you will pick up stitches from crocheted cast on to begin working in the round. Heel is worked in the same way. Both use short rows.

With crochet hook and waste yarn, chain 22 sts

With sock yarn and US1 needle knit 18 sts into the back loop of crochet chain (easiest if you begin your stitches a few in from the end, which is why you chain more than you need.)

Row 1: purl across
Row 2: knit to last st, w&t, turn work
Row 3: purl to last st, w&t, turn work

Row 4: knit to 1 before wrapped stitch and w&t, turn work
Row 5: purl to 1 before wrapped stitch and w&t, turn work

Rep these last two rows until there are 5 wrapped stitches on either side and 8 unwrapped stitches in the middle.

Next row: knit to first wrapped stitch, knit wrapped stitch, w&t next stitch, turn work
Row 2: sl 1, purl to first wrapped stitch, purl wrapped stitch, w&t next stitch, turn work

Row 3: sl 1, knit to first double wrapped stitch, knit double wrapped stitch, w&t, turn work
(note: you can tell the stitch is double wrapped because it will have two loops going around the base of the stitch. It may help to use stitch markers to mark where your last w&t stitch is until you can tell the wrapped stitches apart.)
Row 4: sl 1, purl to first double wrapped stitch, purl double wrapped stitch, w&t, turn work

Rep these last two rows until all stitches have been double wrapped

To begin working in the round:
Pick up live stitches from the crocheted cast on edge. To do this you will use another DPN needle and insert needle into the live stitch, pull out the waste yarn holding the stitch. Continue until all live stitches are picked up.

Separate the stitches evenly onto 4 needles. (9 each needle) pm to mark the beginning of your round.

Begin working foot:
Round 1: knit around.
(tip: be sure to pull the stitches at each side of the toe tight when you get to them, it may be best to knit 2 together at each side the first round, then to even out the number of stitches the next round k1fb at each side of the toe, this will close up any gap at the sides of the toe.)

Continue knitting around for 2 inches (3 inches from bottom of toe.)

Determine which side (which 18 sts) you want to be the top and which part you want to be the heel.

Knit to the stitches you want to be the heel.

Work short row heel exactly the same as you worked the toe, leaving the 18 sts that make up the top of the foot on their needles and simply work the 18 sts for the heel back and forth flat.

Once heel is worked simply work next round all the way around thus connecting the heel to the top of the foot.

Work 1 round even.
(Note that you may want to knit 2 together this round as well at the sides of the heel to close up any gap. If you find you still have a small hole when the socks are done you can simply darn it together.)

Next rounds: k1,p1 around.
Rep this round for 1 ½ to 2 inches or desired cuff length.

Bind off.

My preferred bind off for a stretchy sock cuff is as follows:
Knit 2, slip these stitches back to left needle and k2tog
K1, slip that stitch and the k2tog stitch back to left needle and k2tog again.

Continue in the manner around.
Break yarn, weave in ends.
